FEELING:  Hopeful.  I have an appointment with a therapist this week.  After a lot of soul-searching and talking things over, I decided I needed to return to therapy late last year, and finally made contact with a therapist who might be able to take me on as a patient.  I’m not expecting immediate results, but I feel like I’ve grabbed hold of a branch, and it might keep me from sinking further.

WATCHING: Something unfathomable has happened:  I watched an episode of The Bachelor and I didn’t hate it!  Sadly, I think I am hooked, even though this is probably the dumbest show I have ever seen in my life.  I don’t know how the producers found so many inarticulate women who look just like Kelly Ripa and have an endless supply of drop-dead gorgeous evening gowns to wear to the (what the fuck even is this) “rose ceremony” – I have no idea what’s going on half the time.  I love watching it with closed-captions and taking screen-shots of the contestants and whats-his-name “Ben?” saying the most grammatically incorrect sentences like (I shit you not) “I like to thinking smart things!”  Oh Olivia, what are you think-thinking girl?  This show makes me wonder so many things, not the least of which, how do the girls’ “loose, beachy curls” stay so damn perfect all the time????

LISTENING TO:  I’m so in love with 70’s music lately!  Power ballads, funk, folk, disco?  It truly is the best decade of music!

READING:  I’ve been looking for new blogs to read.  What do I love?  Writing.  Personality.  And faces.  I feel like if I wouldn’t recognize a blogger’s face, I don’t really know them!

WORKING ON:  Upping my blogging game!  I feel like I’ve already changed so much around here in the past year.  What’s holding me back?  Imposter syndrome?  Maybe?  I’m trying to really raise the quality of posts over here.  My mission is twofold: 1) to be boldly hilarious without offending, and 2) to be the kind of writer whose work I would love to read.  If you like what you read around these parts, holla at your girl, I love the comments so much!!!!  Thank you all for reading this far (and making it through the tough stuff about depression and The Bachelor).

THINKING ABOUT:  Optimism and Pessimism.  What do you think – is the glass half-empty or half-full?  Is it possible to be a happy pessimist?  Does pessimism = depression?  Does optimism = delusion?

EATING:  Struck by a craving for kale, I’ve been on a dark-leafy-greens kick!  I’ve also been working hard (practice makes perfect) on my Bloody Marys – I’m gonna nail them sometime!

LOOKING FORWARD TO:  Starting a new project (I don’t want to say too much) that is both exciting and terrifying!  Warmer temperatures (spring)!

MAKING ME HAPPY:  Starting therapy again!  Sunny days!  My succulents are taking off like gangbusters!  Long, soul-baring talks with my boyfriend!  A great report from my dermatologist (and getting the green-light to increase the face treatments gradually)!  My college bestie coming into town for a visit and staying at my place this weekend!

  1. I love what I read around these parts, and this one has extra resonance for me. I'm trying to get back into therapy myself because ugh, not doing so well. I want to work on my blogging game (and hope the therapy helps with that). And the soul-baring talks with the gf… that is why I fell for her. Keep working your game, and I'll keep reading.

    • Thank you so much, Drew! Good luck finding someone. I'm having major upsets today because the appointment I made had to be cancelled because of an insurance issue. I've been hunting down a therapist actively since December and I'm really upset that I got so close and now I'm back to square one! Insurance in this country is SO BROKEN. I hope your search for a therapist who falls under your insurance and is accepting new patients is 400% easier than mine!!!

  2. Dude, I wish I could get struck by a craving for kale. I've got to low-key trick myself by sneaking it into food to make sure I don't die of scurvy (or whatever it is you get when you don't eat your greens).

    • I heard a long time ago that your body needs the things it craves – like salt, calcium, vitamins, cupcakes…so I try to eat more intuitively and less according to diets and routine. Who knows. Everyone's body chemistry is different!

  3. You are like the 2nd person who writes about working on a secret project… it's funny cause so am I! lol it's such a tease to tell people "a secret project!" Whatevers yours is, good luck! and also… I love the bachelor! haha this season with Ben is the first one I have ever seen but I love it. It's just something easy to watch… which is what I am all about right now

    • This is my first season of The Bachelor, too! I love/hate it so much. There's like no substance, but LOTS of editing. It's like the show is just tracking shots of Ben walking around in various places with his hands in his pockets while they play a voiceover of him saying "I'm really starting to fall for these girls/I had no idea if would be this hard/I believe one of these women is my wife" which makes him sound like an amnesiac on some twisted ddystopian future reality show who's trying to be reunited with a wife who's also lost her memory and if he picks the wrong girl they both get put to death.

  4. Does offensive make you laugh?
Just try to either punch up, or make fun of yourself.
Check out some clips from the comedy cen tral show about the two girls in Brooklyn. They are truly funny and feminist.
Can I say the name? Are there rules to product placement or anything?
    I'm really tired.

    • BROAD CITY! I LOVE THEM!!!

Here's my thing about "offensive" humor: I feel like "offensive" idiots use "no i'm just edgy" to excuse rape jokes and racism, etc, so we've gotten to the point where we confuse "offensive" & "edgy" – what I love about Broad City, for example, is that is IS EDGY without being OFFENSIVE. They have so many opportunities to make offensive jokes (like fat jokes or slut-shaming humor) but they NEVER DO because they're classy. Their humor is edgy (smoking pot in a dentist' office and scaring children, masturbating on Skype) but not offensive because they still find A MILLION THINGS to laugh about that aren't mean, cheap shots. John Oliver is also great because he "punches up" every time. I miss The Hairpin so much (don't you? oh my word) because they had so much funny things to say that were just FUNNY and often edgy without being mean-spirited. I like to hope that I'm funny without being mean-spirited but I know sometimes I mess up, but I'm working on it.
