30DHN: The Last Item I Purchased

The last item I purchased were some Biotin supplements at Duane Reade.

At the register, the checkout clerk asked me how I was doing.  I replied honestly that I was doing well.  Really well.

“The sun is shining, how could it get any better?”  I paused, feeling empathy for a fellow working man.  “I suppose it could be better if you weren’t working, huh?”

“Naw, I don’t mind the working!”  he replied with a big smile.  “If I wasn’t working today, I wouldn’t be having this chat with you, Meghan.”

My eyes flashed recognition.

“Don’t you remember me?  I sat behind you in math class?  I always wore a black hat.  I cheated off your paper.”

I honestly couldn’t remember him.  I couldn’t remember math class.  I stalled, not wanting to admit that I didn’t recognize this friendly stranger and apparent former acquaintance.

“Math, huh?”  I said, swiping my card through the machine.  “That was a poor choice on your part.  I was, and still am, terrible at math.”

After I signed the receipt, the thought occurred to me.

“You saw my name on the receipt!  Oh!  You’re just joking with me!”

“Actually, I saw your name when you swiped your club card.  I’m just messin’ with ya.  Have a great day.”
